The Knobs: Guestbook

WTF??

September 9, 2011

What's this BS about Biddlefest being cancelled? Who's the dumbass who decided this? Stupid fucking Serbs!! Or was it some other conflict? Someone fucked up on this one!

Happy Birthday to former Knobs drummer-extraordinaire Mr. Phillip Falcocchio. He would have been 65 years young today. Rest in Peace. "..if there's a rock n roll heaven, well you know they got a hell of a band..."

*sigh* No Biddle Fest... :(

August 20, 2011

First off: liked the Animal House references.
Here's a couple, Serbian Club to Knobs:"You f***** up, you trusted us'(Otter to Flounder after the road trip)

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?(or something like that)Bluto after Dean Wormer closed the delta house.
Well I can tell you a plan is currently being hatched to revive Biddlefest for next year. Not only is it credible, and exremely doable, but it will also benefit the community at large including the Biddle Vets. I hope I didn't give anyhing away.

One last thing: Mark your debut on the Trib Total Media commercial was duly noted. You definitely have a future on the small screen!

Looking thru the photo gallery, it seems the majority of the pics are of people having fun at Biddlefest. I hope Alicia didn't have t shirts ordered. If she did we'll have to play a show to pay for them.

August 17, 2011

It is indeed a shame about Biddlefest. And as far as Jimmy goes, in the highly sophisticated words of Boon, from Animal House...."Forget it, he's rolling."

Middle Management

August 17, 2011

Biddlefest is indeed cancelled; I stand corrected from my Aug 9th post. We thought for sure this was just rumors, as this unfortunately has been the same scenario dealt with every year right before Biddlefest...but even the highest levels of management didn't see this coming to a cancellation. I will let any further explanation come from our fearless leader, but Jimmy you are correct on all fronts, so sad. (by the way, didn't Japan attack Pearl Harbor?!?.....just sayin :)

Jimmy

August 17, 2011

Such a shame about Biddlefest. So many great memories from over the years. So many great musicians. Joe Grushecky, Norman Nardini, Ernie Moyer, The late great Alan Anthony, from Detroit, Mi. Of Course, The Knobs, who were an integral part of the event. It is sad that one person, has the authority to destroy an event that was such a part of history to a small community like Biddle. Was it over when the Germans attacked Pearl Harbor? Hell No!
Might be a new beginning...just sayin'

August 15, 2011

I'm hearing it's cancelled again...what gives? Why would the Serbs cancel an event of that magnitude?

Middle Management

August 9, 2011

@ Casual Observer:
Actually we almost cancelled it because there wasn't enough drinking. We are remedying this issue and thank you for your patience. In the meantime, Biddlefest 22 is On.

I heard Biddlefest is cancelled. Can anyone enlighten me? It was cancelled because of too many bikers, and too much drinking?
What gives?

PJ

January 29, 2011

Johnny - in response to you I was going to say something about how awesome the Knobs are, and how awesome it is to be one....then i realized you said "No one cares enough to be apathetic.."....

Would that then mean that the Knobs don't care enough to not care that much? Does that, in turn, mean that we only care a whole big bunch??!?!

DRJ

January 28, 2011

I hear ya loud & clear. I'm a one many army over here as far as all that stuff goes, but thats ok I guess........Atleast I know something will get done.

However, it still doesnt quite make sense.

Johnny

January 28, 2011

Hell is probably where we're going. One of the reasons we are "at the bottom" is because no one in the Knobs even cares enough to be apethetic when it comes to self-promotion

DRJ

January 26, 2011

Johhny, I caught your reference to "why the knobs are where they are".

Do you happen to be referring to....At the bottom?? Dont sweat it, a Bon Scott once said "Hell aint a bad place to be!"

Hey Mark
It was good seeing you at the Cafe. It has been awhile and as always the conversation was good. I really like Dave alot, he's a funny guy, and you always know what he' thinking.(for better or worse) As per our conversation, one thing's for sure I know where the bodies are buried. I wanted to give you guys a copy of Daydrinkin', but I didn't have any. That probably goes a long way in explaining why the Knobs are where they are. If you e-mail me on this site, and leave you address, I will send you and Dave a couple copies. I'm always interested in what you think.

Mark

January 25, 2011

January 3, 2011

Not only was Phil Sr. a great drummer, but a great friend, and human being.

Johnny

January 3, 2011

DRJ: Good List. I'm not a big fan of "Hard" rock, but I appreciate the skill level of these players, because I know what kind of time and dedication it takes to get to that level. Andy Summers is a good choice. You don't have to play alot of notes to be a great player. I gotta tell you I'm surprised about you're Black man reference. I didn't think you were influenced by Black music. Personally I've always considered my self a black drummer/vocalist trapped inside a white body. Which will go along way into understanding my list of Drummers, no order

1. Clyde Stubblefield % Bernard"Pretty" Purdie: These guys played for James Brown. Their grooves defined Funk. Probably the most sampled drummers in modern music.

2. Wm."Benny" Benjamin & "Pistol" Pete Allen:
These guys played on all everything that Motown recorded while they were still based in Detroit. It just doesn't get better than this

3. Al Jackson Jr: Drummer for Booker T. Played on alot of the stuff recorded at Stax records in Memphis. All the Sam and Dave Stuff. Steve Cropper once said that the key to Stax records success was Al's drumming. That pretty much says it all.

4. Earl Palmer: He played on alot of the early stuff that came out of New Orleans, however for me his claim to fame is his work on the seminal Little Richard records. If the groove on "Lucille" doesn't move you, you better check your pulse.
5. Hal Blaine: This guy has played on more hit records than any musician in the history of rock'n'roll. He played on all the Phil Spector records, he played on all of the Beach boys early work. Google him and you will be amazed at the stuff he has done.

Well that's it for now. I have more to say on drummers. Which should come as no great surprise to any one.

Ricknob

January 2, 2011

Hey PJ, George was on my short list too, along with many others. Jeff Beck, Frank Zappa, Steve Cropper, Richie Blackmore...
Hard to pick just 5.
Bonham was probably the drummer that moved me the most. Any drummer who plays the song more than plays the drums always gets my attention.
When we got the final mixes for 2 Americas, I couldn't stop listening to the drums. I think Dave Hanner knew he had something rare and good there and worked to give it the proper presentation. Phil was recorded well and his performance is stunning to me. I don't normally listen to stuff I play on much, but I listen to "Rich Get Richer" just to hear Phil play.

PJ

January 2, 2011

Ok I twisted my own arm. Drummers.
I'm not going to do this from an overly-technical standpoint, because in my opinion that's pretty boring. I also won't waste time putting them in any particular order:

Phil Collins - he is so skilled at making songs out of drum parts. Listen to "That's All," "Sussudio," "Easy Lover," or "In the Air Tonight."

Abe Laboriel, Jr. - mostly a session drummer, and often passed by, Abe has worked with Steve Vai, Seal, kd Lang, and Sting, up until his continuous work with McCartney's current live band. He does a great job of emulating what Ringo (or Paul??) was trying to bring out, and his own touch is magnificent too: he uses a small kit, he's a big dude, that plays with BIG swooping motions, but only hits the drum one. big. time. Awesome

Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews Band) - Some think he is too busy...but I think he walks a fine line between busy-ness and funk/soul/rock. His collaborations with other musicians show his versatility, as does his attempts at cover songs...the Knobs try to emulate DMB's version of "Time of the Season," and his driving drum groove is key to that...and something that was unfortunately not captured on the Zombies' original.

Ringo Starr - I have went back and forth my whole life on whether he was great or not...now I'm sure he is. His drums on "In My Life," "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "Hey Jude" (which was accidental), "Come Together" and "The End" tell the tale for me. Not technically sound by any stretch, but totally captured his own vibe and made magic.

John Bonham - There is no better rock drummer in my opinion..what a snare drum sound! what a master of the double bass! I could go on for hours about him. Gone too soon.

Stewart Copeland - arguably my favorite drummer of all time, Copeland opened up my eyes to what drumming could be: hi-hat fills, use of rack toms in verses...hell, I never realized how effective hitting a crash cymbal could be when you hit it at times other than just on "the 1." Drummers, try hitting it on the 4, or the 2! Amazing stuff.

Phil Falcocchio, Sr. - If we are listing local celebrities like Rick Baughman on the guitar rankings, then Phil has a place on the drum rankings...Obviously, I will appear biased, but honestly I have never met or played with a drummer that has a better keep on time..that has a better drive in his playing. He only had a few rudiments that he used wisely (the solo at the end of the Knobs' Rock and Roll comes to mind), and he never over used them. He idolized drummers that played big but not too much: Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Chris Slade/Phil Rudd.
Maybe the Knobs will attest to this as well, but I've never met any musician that played with Phil Sr. that wasn't thrilled with his drumming. He was the best drummer for the Knobs, and no one can or has matched him...and i speak for all of the Knobs drummers when i say...we're ok with that.
:)

PJ

January 2, 2011

Gotta love Gilmour, Page, Clapton and Hendrix - those are obvious. But Joe Walsh is my favorite. Rick, I'm glad you brought him up..great style and balls in his playing. I can't believe no one said George Harrison...obviously influenced by Chuck Berry and other greats that Johnny alluded to, but wow, what an individual style! I can pick out a Harrison solo from miles away. The thing about George is he doesn't play guitar, he plays vocals through his guitar. Here Comes the Sun (which was the most downloaded Beatle song since they released their music on iTunes last month, by the way) is a genius riff. And the solo on Something give me chills every time i hear it.
Can we do drummers next?

Da Rodneys Jim

January 2, 2011

1. Chuck Berry

2. Ted Nugent - Forget about the few songs the AWD knows from him, like Cat Scratch Fever, Free For All, Straglehold. If you ever got big into this guy at all, you'd know that this guy is beyond ridicilous. I've been to many concerts/shows, but have never been wowed the way I was when I saw him a few years back at the pepsi roadhouse. He reeks of black mans soul and american rock n roll. So good, it's stupid.

3. Andy Summers - IMO, one of the most underrated guitarist ever. He does alot of very intricate playing and pain in the ass picking that many guitarist wouldnt take the time and effort to compile. On the last concert dvd released by The Police, "Certifiable", his playing shines through the whole show. I'm certain that The Police are one band that couldnt replace their guitarist and continue on making quality music.

4. Eddie Van Halen - Johnny, everything you said about Hendrix, I'll use for the description of EVH. Although each of our top 5 picks is our very own way of saying who we'd put on OUR Mt. Rushmore of guitarist, I think if there was a 100% official Mt. Rushmore dedicated to rock guitarist, EVH would have to be on it. Without a doubt a trailblazer and the sole reason that probably hundreds of thousands of kids and grown men ever picked up a guitar to begin with.

5. Randy Rhoads - Nearly everything he seemed to put out was brilliant. You won't hear too many recordings using the same 3 generic power chords with him listed as the lead guitarist. It's a shame his life was cut short, as he seemed to love what his "job". I've heard Ozzy in interviews talking about how Randy used to drive him totally nuts with his constant guitar playing. He'd play on the tour bus non stop, warm up before a show by playing for 2 hours, play a 2 hour concert, go backstage and play more, then get on the tour bus and play till he went to sleep.

Jimmy

December 30, 2010

I saw The Eagles a few months ago, and Joe Walsh was definately the high-light of the evening. His guitar work is magic. Who is Danny Gatton? I Must go to Wikipedia.

Johnny

December 30, 2010

Well Rick: Those who can, do. Those who can't, try to talk other people into doing.
Your choices aren't who I thought you would pick. The one I find most curious is Joe Walsh. I loved his stuff with the James Gang. Any way you have two guys who would be on the list of my favorite guitar players.
1. Danny Gatton: (I saw him at Grafitti) And I literaly wanted to burn my stuff after hearing him. You just can't say enough about this guy
2. Mike Cambell: my favorite guitarists always serve the song. Few if any do it better than him. Not many people know he wrote the music and it's his track Don Henley used to write the words for "Boy's Of Summer". It doesn't get much better than this.
3. Keith Richard: this guy's riffs's are the stuff legends are made of. Satisfaction, Start Me Up, Brown Sugar, It goes on and on.
4. Buddy Holly: I'm a huge Buddy Holly fan. Alot of his leads have a Tex-Mex vibe to them. I love that sound the leads he plays on two strings are phenominal.
5. Grady Martin: he was a country picker. His acoustic guitar work is some of the most beautiful guitar playing I've ever heard. The acoustic fills I play in the second verse of Daydrinkin' are my homages to Buddy and Grady.
Well I can go on with this list forever. Let me end this by saying I couldn't let this year go by without shootin' my mouth off one more time, so check out mu new blog.

Ricknob

December 29, 2010

Johnny, I don't know what to say. Thank you for those kind words. A lot of the stuff I come up with is from seeds planted by you. Your knowledge of rock guitar history and your desire and ability to work that knowledge into The Knobs music astounds me. Lets keep it going forever.
My picks for top 5 players, 1 - Dave Hanner. Dave was a huge influence on me many years ago. His tone is great and his choice of notes is always perfect for the song. 2 - Danny Gatton. He could put 8 different styles into one song. 3 - David Gilmour. Tasty, soulful, majestic, emotional. 4 - Joe Walsh.Unique tone & style. 5 - Mike Campbell. The great guitar work on all those great Tom Petty Tunes.
