Is the show at the Polish Club open to the public? Or is it for members only and their guests?

I'm bringin a guy or 2 from the new band to show them what a kick the definition is of "rock n roll" band.

I'm ready to rock. Just a few short hours.

Ricknob

February 20, 2010

Jim, guitars are like chevys. Everybody makes parts for them so the possibilities are like, endless! Customize away, my friend, and throw some pics up so we can all admire your handiwork!

And yes! the Knobbers are at Level 30 tonite! Come on out & party with us!

Da Rodneys Jim

February 20, 2010

Pardon me, Schecter. Not Schaller. Those are the strap locks I just put on my other 2 guitars. Too many esses and ares going on here.

Da Rodneys Jim

February 20, 2010

Word on the street is that the Knobs are playing in Greensburg!
Is this true?
There is no way tomorrow can be filled with as much rock n roll as the forecast is calling for!
RK! got me ANOTHER one...A Schaller this time. Major changes coming to it. I'm morphing it into another creature. Should be completed within 2 weeks..I hope.
I think I'm gettin a bit overboard..But isn't that the whole point of all this rock n roll stuff? I suppose if I wanted to be tamed I'd start studying Perry Como or Don Williams.

Tammy

February 15, 2010

Yes--thank you Peej for sharing Phil Sr.'s thoughts. Your dad was so passionate about so many subjects--I always loved when he shared his opinions--about all kinds of subjects, musical and otherwise. I can picture him setting up his drums before practice and at the same time talking about some old song that really excited him. But you, PJ, got to hear what he really thought and felt about the music he played and listened to, more than any of us.

ricknob

February 13, 2010

PJ, thanks for the inside story on Phil's approach to his music. His comments to you about the tunes he played on were more candid perhaps than the discussions I had with him. Like most musicians, he would often question whether he could have played something differently than what ended up on the CD. I told him I thought his work on Two Americas was flawless. Rich Get Richer is a great example. He doesn't really get off that train til 3:30! THREE MINUTES AND THIRTY SECONDS in and he's still pulsing like a locomotive! And then the fill at 3:38 comes and my jaw hits the floor. And that's just what he intended to do, I'm sure of it. And lets not forget the ride bell on the outro. pure genius.

I Think He's an Icon (Phil Falcocchio...from the vault)

February 13, 2010

"Does Your Mama Know About Me?" by Bobby Taylor...Phil Falcocchio thought this tune was amazing. He would wake me up to sing it with me....
A 60s doo wop tune about inter-racial relationships...the funny part was that this song was written by Tommy Chong of "Cheech and Chong" fame...amazing harmony parts, amazing message...dynamic up and down volume for a "story" of lyrics that became so relevant at that time...and actually, is still pertinent today. Dad thought this one was genius..

after listening to the lyrics, and the instrumentation, the arrangement....i have to agree with him. If you are truly listening to this song, it makes you upset.........a true classic....

I Think He's an Icon (Phil Falcocchio...from the vault)

February 13, 2010

Playing a slow ballad takes more practice than what you'd think. It's not about banging all the drums -- it's about the aura of the tune. You must create an atmosphere. No song of Johnny's better shows Phil Falcocchio's adept in this category than "Everyday." Simple drumming, simple fills. This tune - in my opinion - sets Phil in a different category than regular drummers...and means I have a lot to learn!!! This tune illustrates his professionalism. A cut above the rest. Class. Perfection between the bass and drums. Perfection in simplicity that I - and many others - could learn from. His "wildest" fills are simple in this tune...they are succinct. They are pertinent.....This was one of his favorites; he took pride in this one. Listen and enjoy.

I Think He's an Icon (Phil Falcocchio...from the vault)

February 13, 2010

Two Americas has a lot of songs that are simply awesome. I mentioned before that "Rich Get Richer" is my dad, to a T.

But another song from that album needs your attention too..."Walk A Man's Walk." Both this song and "Rich Get Richer" had my dad coming into my bedroom at the time saying "Peej you have to hear these songs."

Again, if you want to know about my dad...if you want to understand his drumming....if you want to know what "it's all about..."...listen to this tune. It's a pop masterpiece. It has simple drums with simple fills. It's a song that is effortless, and beautiful...and that's what Dad tried to convey to me. If you ever watched Phil Falcocchio going nuts on the drums and thought "how can I learn the basics of what's amazing," he would direct you to this tune...

He was proud to play on this one Johnny. This was a tune he would wake me up and show me....he got to do a little fill before each chorus, and then continue playing simple. He loved this one...He took a lot of pride in this tune..

I Think He's an Icon (Phil Falcocchio...from the vault)

February 13, 2010

Phil Falcocchio died just over 10 months ago. Many wonderful things have been said about him, and I speak for my entire family when I say 'thank you,' so much, for everything you've said.
Since he died, I have felt that I have so much to say on his behalf. He had a style; he had a certain passion; he didn't write songs, but he had so many ideas as to how a band should go about their business. Trying to be a musician as I was growing up, his viewpoints were a mainstay in my life - even though at times I agreed with him, a lot of times I didn't. Ultimately, now that he's gone, I want his perspective to be heard. I don't know if it's because he's gone or not....but I tell you what, the man had some brilliant opinions. I feel bad that it has taken his death for me to realize this.

That said, starting now and continuing indefinitely, I want to share with you his thoughts. It includes what he thought was right to play on drums, who he thought was a good drummer, favorite songs, references to certain musicians, etc etc.

I dealt with it. I heard him. And now, dare I say it, it's like the words of a prophet.

This will be an ongoing thing...there's a lot to say. But it's time to throw it out there. I hope it generates some good conversation...I mean, he was just a man with opinions...I'm sure he wasn't always right....but you need to know his thoughts.

Without further adieu...the 1st installment:

Dad loved simple drumming. He could play better fills than anyone I know, but his devotion was in simplicity. His thoughts were "save your fills...surprise people when they least expect it.."... and this is in my opinion Drumming 101. If you want to know what moved Phil...what made him get going...listen to the Knobs track "Rich Get Richer." It's a simple groove, but a groove like that is what makes rock music. The sound of the snare; the way the drums mesh with the bass; that TRAIN of SOUND that's created...that's what he loved. That sound is Phil Falcocchio. That's what he aspired to....he wanted a groove more than he ever wanted an applause for his solo on "Rock n Roll" by Zeppelin...that's what moved him. Listen to that groove. Feel that beat. That's what got him off......until next time....

Kelly Who?....

Tammy

February 10, 2010

Rick, I'll let you in on a secret . . .that scream in Shaky Ground in pre-recorded. I'm lip synching. Oh damn, now everybody knows.

Kelly

February 10, 2010

Jimmy Sinclair....yumyum!!

Sheila

February 10, 2010

Roger Daltry....yumyum...

Ricknob

February 10, 2010

Sounded live to me. The vocals were not tight at all. I think if they were pre-recorded they would've been more polished.

Tammy's scream in "Shaky Ground" is the new standard by which all Rock n Roll screams will be measured.

That look is fairly recent for Townhsend. Unless you're talking about Pete Oddo. Johnny has been sporting that look for decades.

Paul

February 9, 2010

Maybe Johnny tries to emulate Pete.

Tammy

February 9, 2010

I didn't think they were lip synching, except I'm suspicious that the scream in Won't Get Fooled Again was a recording. They didn't show Roger Daltry's face when it happened, although just before it really looked like he was gearing up to do it. My guess is he really did scream, but there was a recording behind him to back him up. I can tell you, as a singer, you're never quite sure how those screams are gonna come out, so I don't blame him if he had some help on it.

More importantly, Johnny--did Pete Townshend pay you for the right to use your look on stage? Because I could swear he was wearing your hat and shades.

Jimmy

February 9, 2010

Mardi Gras is WILD EVERY Year....
My sister Julie is heading there tomorrow!

Gina (leather one)

February 9, 2010

At the beginning of The Who's performance I thought they were lipsynching. The audio seemed a little off. But it got much better into their performance. So I don't know for sure.

John, keep your clothes on.

Johnny

February 9, 2010

I was talking to a friend yesterday who said the Who were lipsynching. I just watched the performance on You Tube, and I couldn't tell from the shots. If they were it was a remarkable job, but extremely sad. Sometimes you've got to be held to a higher standard. Does anyone out there know for sure?

Ricknob

February 9, 2010

If Jeff Jimerson ain't singing it, I usually mute the anthem.
The Who show was great. Drummer Zack Starkey is a good fit, IMHO.
How do they set that up and tear it down so fast?!?! Awesome!
Congrats to the Saints! Mardi Gras is gonna be even wilder this year, Jimmy.

Johnny

February 8, 2010

Tammy don't hold back, say what you really feel! As far as Carrie Underwood goes, I didn't think she was that bad. She was a little shaky on pitch, but that's a tough song to perform, especially with the delay that you hear in the stadium. It can mess up what you hear in the earpiece. Personally I think her outfit was too tight, and it hindered her breathing, which is, as you know, crucial to hitting the notes. Now had she been at the very least topless, I think it's fair to say we would have all seen and heard a much better performance.
Now onto Roger Daltry. I thought his performance was great. I've heard him in alot of live shows, and he has always had problems with pitch. I mean some of them were terrible. Even if he was using some kind of pitch correction he sounded great. His voice was very powerful(at least I think) I'm not sure pitch correction could deliver that kind of power. Pete Townsend(his child porn charges aside) was phenonminal! This guy is in a league of his own when it comes to performing. He should be required viewing for any kid who wants to know how to move on stage with a guitar. He's the master. You see Tammy when you're as good as you and those guys are, you don't have to take your clothes off. Unless you want to.

Gina (leather one)

February 8, 2010

I really didn't pay attention to Ms. Underwood so I can't comment on her "key" abilities.

The Who kicked entire *ss in their 1/2 time performance. I love watching old dudes rock out!

Tammy

February 8, 2010

Last night's Superbowl entertainment proved what a farce American Idol is--did anyone else notice that Carrie Underwood can't stay in key? I think the key was too low for her--she was sharp on the low notes at the end of the phrases, and then toward the end of the song she was all over the place. And then, after 45+ years of abusing their vocal chords and eardrums, The Who comes out and kicks ass--not just musically, but vocally. Yeah, Roger Daltry's voice is awful rough these days, but at least he stays in the right goddamn key.

john or rick -- excellent rearrangement/updatery of the photo section...really tells the tale...

in fact, not to be cliche (too late), but those pics show how much the Knobs are more than just a band. The Knobs are family. The Knobs are the friends that come out. The Knobs are all kinds of local musicians. Everyone's a little Knobbish, aren't they?

I don't know, Gina. I have a mac running the safari browser and nothing happened when I clicked on Bill. It was just a .jpg that I uploaded to the site so I'm baffled!

January 29, 2010

RK: No, no, no. If you click on Bill the cat you have an option to pause= or close x.

If you click on pause= it turns into play>. Get it now???? Why doesn't Bill "play"? Is this inaction some sort of tease to those who toil by day and sleep by night?

Oh, he's a player. He used to be the lead singer in the band "Deathtongue".

Gina (leather one)

January 29, 2010

I am ready for some KNOBS style rock n roll this weekend!!!

I should be bringin a couple new friends to share the experience of pure american rock n roll with.

By the way, the boys new favorite song is::::
"I'm going to party town!"

I am ready to freakin rock N roll!

Does this place normally get a decent crowd?

January 23, 2010

Eddie Steen, the Elvis impersonator...yes yes...he actually serenaded my company's Xmas party a few weeks ago.

He sings to a backing track, ever-so-accurately cued up by him mom and dad.

I'm not ripping on the guy, I'm being serious. I'm not really an Elvis fan...but I'll say it was interesting. And, (i don't know if i missed an inside joke, here, but), YES, it beats Cleveland.

Is it a take-off from The Doors??

Jimmy

January 22, 2010

I think Rush is one of the greatest 3 piece bands ever....next to ZZ Top. (It is rumored ZZ Top's name came from Rolling Doobies with Zig Zag and Top papers)....I'm just saying.

Da Rodneys Jim

January 21, 2010

So what's the new deal at Rodneys?
From what I gather, they have a dj while the band is on break?
Hmmmmmmm..Well...Alright.
Sounds like I missed a good show, but I was in NJ for a Springsteen thing. Yeah.
Looking forward to the next couple shows. Especially the Level 30 place. Looks very cool.
Tammy I'd gladly let you listen to any Rush song for me for the rest of my life. For some reason, I get visions of Leprechauns prancing through clover fields when I hear them. Makes me uneasy...
Definitely good to hear the place was rocking and people weren't making use of the chairs as usual. Whats there to do this weekend?
I was thinking about a long overdue trip to the highly corrupt RNR HOF in cloudy Cleveland Ohio but seem to be talking myself out of it more and more by the hour.

I don't have blisters on me fingers...
But It does feel like I dipped them in super glue multiple times. Time for another dowsing.

January 20, 2010

Tammy, I think John and I were referring to the crowd's reaction to the DJ. I had to listen to Marilyn Manson on the way home!

Tammy

January 19, 2010

Well Johnny and Gina, I guess you guys are a little more tolerant of the DJ hip hop stuff than I am. I spent most of Saturday evening wishing I had stayed home and watched Chiller Theater w/Carly. I had to listen to Rush all the way home to remind myself that a man can write an entire song without once mentioning his own genitalia.

Gina (leather one)

January 19, 2010

John...I agree, cool evening at Rodney's. Many new faces and the place was packed. Will the Level 30 gig be similar? Still haven't checked it out.

Johnny

January 18, 2010

Rodneys gig on Saturday may have been the best one we ever had there. The dance club aspect was really cool, and it really held the crowd. Alot of new faces were getting into the band. Thanks to DJ Jamm for pumpin' the jams. All I can say, it was way too much.(in a good way)

gina - and anyone else interested in the Level 30 show ----

Actually, don't feel bad about not finding any info...i tried looking it up online myself, and it was my first unsuccessful Google attempt since 1973.

In any event, after some research -->
Level 30 is a bar that is located on the same property as the Rodeway Inn, Rte 30 West up by Westmoreland Mall...it's basically next to the now-defunct Corsi's Indoor Golf, and the now-happening Coffee Bean.

You will not want to call the Rodeway Inn for info...they share the same property, but are totally unrelated businesses.

After speaking with Allison, the lovely lady who owns the joint, you can find more info about the club @ "level30lounge.com" ....but she said the site's not quite finished yet, so check there in about a week. Our show, and other bands, will be in the entertainment section.

hope that helps...
peace.

January 8, 2010

Hey now!
First and foremost Happy Birthday to Elvis Presley, the King of Rock'n'Roll. He IS 75 years young today! Don't let anyone kid you this is the guy who sang the note heard round the world. Now anyone who wants to debate this is welcome. He's the Kahuna, El Jeffe. He represented that dream that all who have followed him, have had, and will continue to have for a long time to come. Now there were alot of people rockin' in those days, but Elvis was the guy who brought it to middle class, white bread America, and that's where the money was, and continues to be. Alot of music people knew this, and they were all searching for the vehicle to ride to the top of the popular music food chain. Elvis came roaring out of Memphis with just the right combination of poor black music(the blues), and poor white music(country and western), and the rest as they say was history. Elvis represented all that is and can be great about r'n'r, such as the power, exuberence and joy it can produce. Unfortunately he also represented all the crap it can produce, such as the bloated excess. After all no matter how great he was, he was still only human. Again don't let anyone kid you Elvis was one of the pivotal figures in 20th century American history.
A shout out to my buddy and former classmate Wally Newbauer, posting from the Sunshine State. Happy New Year!
Our dates are 1/16 at Rodneys, 1/30 at Larimer Firehall, 2/20 at Level 30 in Greensburg, 2/27 at Mr. Mikes, and hope early in March at the Polish Club.
The new CD is nearing completion. There will be plenty of 3 chord r'n'r. There will be a couple surprises. We have an unusual instrumental on it, and a couple very pop sounding songs. Hopefully it will be out late spring. Actually I'm heading to the studio now. Everyone have a great New Year!

The week before Christmas..(by Jimmy)
December 6, 2006

T’was the week before Christmas,
And all through Knobland
Jimmy was drinking,
Waiting for the band

When in walked Tammy,
And her friend Lois Twang
The band fired up
And the two Knobettes sang

Led Zep’s Rock n Roll
And Shelter by Stones
And people were dancing
And shaking their bones

With Steve on the Bass,
And Rick on the Lead,
Johnny was jamming,
Phil drummed with great Speed

Gina did shots,
Like they were going out of style,
Missy’s Liver kept up,
On the floor for a while.

When Eli walked in,
And said It’s too loud..
Then looked once around,
And said “Boy what a crowd’

The band it went crazy,
Everything was alright
Knob fans were rocking…
Late into the night

When I looked in the corner,
And saw Gina cry..
She said "somebody help me",
"The bar it went dry".

Jimmy said “Gina, please have no fear”
Just look in my stocking..
It’s full of beer!

So the party continued
And Christmas was here..
Have a great Christmas Season,
And Happy New Year!

As I was rolling up my tongue and popping my eyeballs back in my head, she went over to the juke box, put in a quarter, dropped the robe and started gyrating to "I'm Just A Singer In A Rock and Roll Band".

I went to the Friendship Inn once, before I was 21. Bad dancers IMHO. They had to put their own money into the jukebox for a song to dance to.

R.K. does the Rodeway Inn have a ballroom for The Knobs?

Level 30 is in the Rodeway Inn which used to be the Friendship Inn. It has a storied past largely because it employed exotic dancers. But the whole bar culture was different back then, wasn't it. I mean, that's what I've heard...
It's been remodeled and it looks great now. There's three levels, hence the name.
