The Knobs: Guestbook

How could I forget this part of the conversation? Chuck also wanted to know why the Knobs weren't doing "Livin' in the USA" with Tammy on lead vocal.

Last time I had a drink w/Chuck Berry he told me how in later years he was influenced by the great Johnny Marsiglio.

Tammy, I was awawre of Louie Prima's involvement with "The Jungle Book" I think when he died he was working on one of the movies. He was an incredibly talented, and complex man. I didn't include that for a couple reasons, mainly because I was focusing on his largely uncredited influence, and contribution to r'n'r. Guys like him, and Louie Jordon(the originater of "Caladonia" you know the Robert Plant version), were bridges between the Big Band era, and r'n'r. They are pretty much unknown by the average r'n'r fan. I read an interview with Chuck Berry were he said Louie Jordan's guitar player was a major influence on his style. Imagine being able to say you influenced Chuck Berry. To quote the great Paris Hilton,"That's hot!"
Tammy
July 28, 2010
Hey Johnny--don't forget that Louie Prima was also the inspiration for the animation of "I Wanna Be Like You" in the Disney classic, The Jungle Book. Louis was the voice of the bear (I think his name was Baloo or something like that)--anyway, that's Louie and his band performing that song, and the animation was based on the way they performed. Carly and I belted out a few lines of the song yesterday when we saw that Louie Prima got a star on the Walk of Fame.

While it is true that the iconic Forrest Gump was responsible for many of the great moments of the later half of the 20th century, this is one that he can take no credit. It was all Louie.

And here I always thought Forest Gump was the reason behind Elvis' wiggle...this guestbook is such a learning experience for me.
Johnny
July 26, 2010
Just like Rip Van Winkle, we're waking up. It's been pretty quiet here for awhile, so let me start with some great news: Louis Prima finally got a star(although posthumously) on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. For those of you unfamiliar, he originally wrote and recorded "Jump,Jive, and Wail" made famous by Brian Setzer, and "Just a Giggolo" made famous by Diamond David Lee Roth. He was a bridge between big band music and rock'n'roll. Although he never gets credit(except from real historians) he was truly one of the founding fathers of r'n'r. His sax man Sammy Butera was a template for sax players from King Curtis to Jr. Walker to Clarence Clemons. Actually it is fair to say the interaction, and call and response, between Bruce, and the "Big Man" was generously "borrowed" from Louie's and Sammy's act. Although most listeners could care less, it's important to me to know and understand where stuff comes from. I loved Louie when I was a kid, and continue to love his music. Why this guy isn't in the r'n'r Hall of Fame is lost on me. To explain to you how cool this guy was, Elvis Presley was once asked where he learned to "wiggle" the way he did. Elvis replied, "Louis Prima." Well that about says it all. His version of "That Old Black Magic" with Keely Smith, and Sammy's smokin' sax is is the perfect marriage of "swing" and r'n'r. There is so much more I could say about him, but as I always say, you tube him, and enjoy yourself.

Thanks Jimmy and DRJ. The move was smooth and we are slowly settling in. As they say in Ga. weer fixing to settle down !! Not a lot of Rock & Roll here so I guess I will have to try to change that!!! I found only 1 classic rock radio station and it's like a southern dve but not as good.
THANK YOU JOHNNY for the kind words!!! I feel the same and will miss everyone in Knobland !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone take care - Hope to be able to see everyone sometime when we are able to visit Pa.

As I have often said I don't care who says what here as long as you don't hide behind annonimity. Remember the first amendment only protects you from the govt., not from general stupidity and ignorance from the private sector. Mark I can't really argue with your assesment of Mick Jagger. Actually I agree with everything you said. Sometimes I forget how stylistic rock'n'roll is. The visual aspect of r'n'r has always been lost on me. Yet I know how important it is to average fan. So I guess that's my main problem with MJ. Which means I kind of agree with DRJ also. Anyway I DO love the Stones, and I'm a huge Keith guy. Always have been. I've often said I learned 90% of what I do on guitar from Keith. He's brilliant. He shows how you can be a great, great guitarist without playing 100 notes a second, and using effects out the wahzoo. His riffs are simply the best in r'n'r. Sometimes I think he is the most copied player in r'n'r next to Chuck Berry. He stands alone in showing the importance of the rhythm guitar. Well that's how I feel. More about live CDs in another post.

DRJ...we do agree that the Bigger Bang DVD-the Zilker Park show-is one rockin' concert. I dont' even mind the heavy overdubbing that much. That's probably my favorite disc of that set, and one fine performance by Ronnie.

Well then I guess the lesson learned out of this discussion is that it's all up to each persons definition of "soul", now would that be a fair statement little dude?
Sorry, didnt mean to come across harsh or anything. It was all more tongue in cheek than anything but hey, now I gotta know who I gotta be soft as silk with and who I dont on this music industry mega-forum.

DRJ...wow. Nice to see you've got your hostility on today, hope that works for ya.
As far as your brilliant analysis of my line of questioning...you got me. You got me. You read one post of mine and label me as "half assed-open ended question dude." Love it.
Really, John and I were having a discussion regarding a common criticism of Mick Jagger...which had nothing do with him having too much "soul." (Go back and reread the exchange). Let's stick to the facts Big Fella.
As far as the Stones and Mick Jagger, I'm their biggest fan...which lends me to having a critical eye on occasion, that's all.
Happy International Exile Week!

Gina, I havent really heard of any dates besides the one on the big boa this month.
I'm still kinda debating that one. You going? I'll have to check out his web site and see whats going on, but for sure.
Mark, you remind me of Allen Combs who I listen to every night on the way back from Philly. The way you ask your open ended questions are meant to set yourself up to win the argument, and put the "caller" in a spot where he can answer your half assed questions but not in the exact quation form that you're looking for, therefore, in your mind, you win.
But hey, why the hell would I be in disbelief that you were bitchin about Mick if you wasn't?
End of discussion for me.

John...I can understand how you-or others-would feel that way about Jagger. I'm a fan, a huge fan of the Stones. And when I was a kid, I would say that Jagger was probably 90% of the reason why. Loved his stage presence, his charisma, and his energy. As I approached my mid-30s, I started switching over to being more of a "Keith-guy." To this day, I swear Keith is probably the best ballad singer the Stones have (but I digress). My point....the Stones music is timeless, no doubt. I can be Jagger's worst critic-I think for the most part he is just too "over the top" (although sometimes I do enjoy it) most of the time. However, he can sometimes be the greatest frontman in rock....sometimes it's not about what you do, but what you DON'T do. When he's subtle in his stage presence, I think there's no one better.
Johnny
May 19, 2010
I have loved the Stones since the day Joe Grushecky bought "Introducing The Rolling Stones" and we were listening to it in his room in the summer of 1964. When I heard their version of Chuck Berry's "Oh Carol!" I was dumbstruck. It was like the first time I heard Chuck himself do "Johnny B. Goode" Which was only a few months previous to hearing the Stones. I couldn't believe there was anything anywherer that good. I gotta tell you I have the same viseral(sp) response to their early stuff to this day.
"Exile On Main Street" is a great double album, but in my opinion, it doesn't live up to the level of "Let It Bleed", or "Sticky Fingers". Althought "Tumblin' Dice" is about as good as it gets. I think that if I never saw Mick Jagger, the Stones would have been as important to me as the Beatles were. I know you have to separate the man from the art, but I just can't do it. Every time I see him dance, or posture, I literally want to puke. I don't know what do you think?

You used to be able to "Become a Fan" of bands and other groups on Facebook, but it's my understanding that they changed that, to just being able to "Like" instead....something about it increasing our potential fan base because we are asking less of our audience, or something??? if that makes sense??? anyway, that's what you do.

John, nice blog. I welcome HCR. I'm just not happy about how is going to be paid for. I plan on lowering my salary to avoid the medicare increase and cash in all investments that "earn" unearned income to avoid the capital gain surplus. I think others in this situation will do the same. And what is going to happen to the AWD who is employed by me and other small business owners? I smell unemployment for you guys.
HCR was long overdue...I hope it all works out. In 2014 I'll be a completly different type of business owner. If I'm still in business at all.

Johnny, thanks!
I take that as a huge compliment.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything, right?
That sure is no way to live life.
By the way, thanks for not playing Cafe Supreme (in my recent memory).
I'm hating the place & their business/customer service practices.
The band it going pretty good.
There is drastic improvement every weekend we get together. The sound is getting alot more tighter, and a whole lot less muddy. The lead player and I get together once of twice during the week to practice in addition to all of us getting together on the weekend so that is a huge help too. It's good to have a group of guys who get what it takes, and enjoy it instead of treating it like a chore.
We had to replace the drummer a few weeks ago but it was a great replace if there ever had to be one.
Other than that, yeah, pretty good.
I haven't touched the guitar in a few days and it's kinda driving me nuts but we're starting the moving process and it's killing some of my free time.
Like now.
Time to go load up some boxes and head out.
Talk to ya soon.

Having said that, I am going to blog in the very near future, why I think the Health Care Bill, although extremely flawed is basically a good thing for all of us AWD's. I'll have more to say on this. POV not only don't you understand correct syntax, you apparently don't understand sarcasm either. Actually unless you don't count Major Nidal Hasam who left 13 dead(because he's a US citizen, and soldier on top of that) and Scott Roeder the guy who gunned down George Tiller(domestic terrorism, but hey let's not split hairs) I guess we haven't been hit. BTW that's sarcasm) Labeling your opponent(in this case calling me a liberal) doesn't support your argument. Actually I, along with the likes of Ron Paul(a real conservative) and Dennis Kucinich(a real liberal) were against the invasion. There were other sources of intelligence if you believe what George Tenet(CIA director at the time of 9/11) says in his book. Smart politicians like Paul and Kucinich chose not to blindly drink the kool aid, and eat the dookie sandwich offered up by the administration. If there was any credible evidence that Sadam was in league with Al-Queada it would be the lead story on every Fox News outlet in the world. POV we have been very fortunate that a 9/11 style attack hasn't occurred, but it has nothing to do with the invasion of Iraq. It's like if you use a condom with a hole in it, the women doesn't get pregnant, and you think she didn't get pregnant because you used a condom. OK I'm done for now. POV don't give up so easily. One last thing there's an Army recruiting center at the top of Jacktown Hill by the police station in case any of you Patriots out there are interested.

well certainly the typical leftist response to be expected. Lets focus on a "grammatical error" and not the issues. Firstly, no proof of my allegations? Really? Have...we...been...attacked? Have we? Yes or no? Not that hard. What the heck does the Congo and Darfur have to do with anything? Are they a threat to our national security? Last I checked both were embroiled in internal strife. You know, this is lib thinking. Bomb the oil fields? Why? You all bitch about paying $4 dollars/gallon yet you want to disrupt production? Smart! And so we want to drill in Alaska but no...god forbid a few polar bears get displaced! So we pose an idea to build wind turbines but no...that will wreck the view! You guys all want it both ways. It doesnt work like that. At least the right can make a decision and stick to it. And lest we remember...congress voted to go to war!!! Congress. Both sides! They all had the same intelligence. Right or wrong. They all voted. That is all. And no...this isnt going to be a prolonged debate. You all can respond and refute all you want. I'm happy knowing what I know. I read both sides and make up my own mind. Clearly no one else on here does.

March 23, 2010
POV This was the kind of response I was hoping for. First, I'm not sure how educated you have to be to be realize the phrase is rhetoriCAL nonsense, not "rhetoric nonsense" The reality is you offer no real proof for your allegations. I say the 4000+ dead, not to mention the wounded, and disabled plus approximately 1 trillion dollars spent is at the very least at starting point for my argument. If,we, as a country were worried about human suffering, and sadistic dictators, then why aren't we in Darfur, or The Congo, or for that matter just about anywhere in Africa? If we were so worried about Sadam why didn't we just bomb the oil fields, after all that was the source of his revenue. Actually if you're not busy with revisionist history, you would have noticed that the oil fields in Iraq were the only thing in Iraq NOT bombed. How would you explain that? Anyway I think you get the point(well probably not) Anyway thanks for the response. This forum is about ideas not matter how crazy anyone out there thinks they are. Although it would be nice if you left an e-mail address. It won't be displayed, but Rick will know where to send the police when I disappear. One last thing if you really believe what you say: Join the Army! That's one of the few things that has any impact on guys like me. Again thanks, and don't be a stranger

Saddam Hussein was a necessary evil. He was a Sunni Muslim who kept the Shiite Iranians in check. Bush opened up a big can of worms by invading Iraq. The real reason he sent our boys in there was becasue his old man didn't get the job done the first time around.
opposing POV
March 22, 2010
Ok, so in response to the new blog... have we been attacked on home soil since? How many plots have been foiled since? New evidence has come to light that indeed Saddam Hussein was in contact to acquire nuclear material both fissionable and with launch capabilities. The man gassed his own people. Committed genocide on whole tribes of innocent people. So...you might say, "So what"? Why are our troops there getting killed for them? Well, if all you liberals want peace and love in this world how can you sleep at night knowing there was a man in charge of a country who FUNDED terroist cells and was DIRECTLY responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent women and children? So if not us making the sacrifices then...who? Given that elections were just held freely in Iraq I would say all you bleeding hearts would rejoice in that. And if you are so cynical as to suggest those elections were rigged, go ahead and look at our own political system. Stop pointing fingers and realize all administrations do what they want for good, bad or indifferent. Get over yourselves and educate yourself before blindly spouting rhetoric nonsense. I dont see 1 American living in fear here. Why dont you try going to sleep on the streets of Kabul.

Is this true?
There is no way tomorrow can be filled with as much rock n roll as the forecast is calling for!
RK! got me ANOTHER one...A Schaller this time. Major changes coming to it. I'm morphing it into another creature. Should be completed within 2 weeks..I hope.
I think I'm gettin a bit overboard..But isn't that the whole point of all this rock n roll stuff? I suppose if I wanted to be tamed I'd start studying Perry Como or Don Williams.

Yes--thank you Peej for sharing Phil Sr.'s thoughts. Your dad was so passionate about so many subjects--I always loved when he shared his opinions--about all kinds of subjects, musical and otherwise. I can picture him setting up his drums before practice and at the same time talking about some old song that really excited him. But you, PJ, got to hear what he really thought and felt about the music he played and listened to, more than any of us.

PJ, thanks for the inside story on Phil's approach to his music. His comments to you about the tunes he played on were more candid perhaps than the discussions I had with him. Like most musicians, he would often question whether he could have played something differently than what ended up on the CD. I told him I thought his work on Two Americas was flawless. Rich Get Richer is a great example. He doesn't really get off that train til 3:30! THREE MINUTES AND THIRTY SECONDS in and he's still pulsing like a locomotive! And then the fill at 3:38 comes and my jaw hits the floor. And that's just what he intended to do, I'm sure of it. And lets not forget the ride bell on the outro. pure genius.

"Does Your Mama Know About Me?" by Bobby Taylor...Phil Falcocchio thought this tune was amazing. He would wake me up to sing it with me....
A 60s doo wop tune about inter-racial relationships...the funny part was that this song was written by Tommy Chong of "Cheech and Chong" fame...amazing harmony parts, amazing message...dynamic up and down volume for a "story" of lyrics that became so relevant at that time...and actually, is still pertinent today. Dad thought this one was genius..
after listening to the lyrics, and the instrumentation, the arrangement....i have to agree with him. If you are truly listening to this song, it makes you upset.........a true classic....

Playing a slow ballad takes more practice than what you'd think. It's not about banging all the drums -- it's about the aura of the tune. You must create an atmosphere. No song of Johnny's better shows Phil Falcocchio's adept in this category than "Everyday." Simple drumming, simple fills. This tune - in my opinion - sets Phil in a different category than regular drummers...and means I have a lot to learn!!! This tune illustrates his professionalism. A cut above the rest. Class. Perfection between the bass and drums. Perfection in simplicity that I - and many others - could learn from. His "wildest" fills are simple in this tune...they are succinct. They are pertinent.....This was one of his favorites; he took pride in this one. Listen and enjoy.

Two Americas has a lot of songs that are simply awesome. I mentioned before that "Rich Get Richer" is my dad, to a T.
But another song from that album needs your attention too..."Walk A Man's Walk." Both this song and "Rich Get Richer" had my dad coming into my bedroom at the time saying "Peej you have to hear these songs."
Again, if you want to know about my dad...if you want to understand his drumming....if you want to know what "it's all about..."...listen to this tune. It's a pop masterpiece. It has simple drums with simple fills. It's a song that is effortless, and beautiful...and that's what Dad tried to convey to me. If you ever watched Phil Falcocchio going nuts on the drums and thought "how can I learn the basics of what's amazing," he would direct you to this tune...
He was proud to play on this one Johnny. This was a tune he would wake me up and show me....he got to do a little fill before each chorus, and then continue playing simple. He loved this one...He took a lot of pride in this tune..

Phil Falcocchio died just over 10 months ago. Many wonderful things have been said about him, and I speak for my entire family when I say 'thank you,' so much, for everything you've said.
Since he died, I have felt that I have so much to say on his behalf. He had a style; he had a certain passion; he didn't write songs, but he had so many ideas as to how a band should go about their business. Trying to be a musician as I was growing up, his viewpoints were a mainstay in my life - even though at times I agreed with him, a lot of times I didn't. Ultimately, now that he's gone, I want his perspective to be heard. I don't know if it's because he's gone or not....but I tell you what, the man had some brilliant opinions. I feel bad that it has taken his death for me to realize this.
That said, starting now and continuing indefinitely, I want to share with you his thoughts. It includes what he thought was right to play on drums, who he thought was a good drummer, favorite songs, references to certain musicians, etc etc.
I dealt with it. I heard him. And now, dare I say it, it's like the words of a prophet.
This will be an ongoing thing...there's a lot to say. But it's time to throw it out there. I hope it generates some good conversation...I mean, he was just a man with opinions...I'm sure he wasn't always right....but you need to know his thoughts.
Without further adieu...the 1st installment:
Dad loved simple drumming. He could play better fills than anyone I know, but his devotion was in simplicity. His thoughts were "save your fills...surprise people when they least expect it.."... and this is in my opinion Drumming 101. If you want to know what moved Phil...what made him get going...listen to the Knobs track "Rich Get Richer." It's a simple groove, but a groove like that is what makes rock music. The sound of the snare; the way the drums mesh with the bass; that TRAIN of SOUND that's created...that's what he loved. That sound is Phil Falcocchio. That's what he aspired to....he wanted a groove more than he ever wanted an applause for his solo on "Rock n Roll" by Zeppelin...that's what moved him. Listen to that groove. Feel that beat. That's what got him off......until next time....
